Kudos to Bill Brandes, the visionary owner of the Kingfisher and the entire staff. Since acquiring the resort Bill has upgraded the rooms, beautifully done, the Spa, and the dining facilities. It’s really is a treasure on Vancouver Island.

At the Kingfisher Chef Danai Hongwanishkul combines Thai, French, South American and Japanese influences with his kitchen team and was recently recognized for culinary excellence in 2026 by the BC Hotel Association. Another prestigious award.

If you have not been there consider a stay for a special occasion. Take a look at what they offer here.

Be sure to look at what the Spa offers. And if you are in the area and feeling peckish please sample the food in the lounge or the dining room. You will be impressed.

ICE CREAM OR GELATO

There is good news for ice cream and GELATO lovers. CRAIG STREET CREAMERY opened this past Summer in PARKSVILLE.  For some reason I only heard about it recently and today I dropped in to see what they offer.

Lots! That’s what they offer. 24 flavours of Ice Cream, 24 flavours of Gelato. Several visits to Italy turned me into a Gelato fan so I had to try my favourite, Pistachio!  It was good. No they don’t make their own, yet. The Gelato is sourced from Mario’s Gelato in Vancouver and Saltspring Island Gelato.

Is Gelato better than Ice Cream?  That depends on your own taste. But if you have ever had Gelato from the World Famous Gelateria Dondoli in San Gimignano, Tuscany I think Gelato wins. It’s fantastic!

What’s the difference? Gelato is denser, has more milk & less cream and the flavours are more intense. There is less air whipped into it. It’s also served slightly warmer. And in this man’s opinion it is just BETTER!

In any case, if you have a craving for Ice Cream or Gelato check out Craig Street Creamery. They also make Milk Shakes!
